Parents, Don’t Worry! TSA is Super Accommodating to Diaper Bags
Flying with young children is typically not a walk in the park. If you fly frequently with kids, you’re likely a pro at it by now but if you’re traveling with your kiddo for the first time or just want a better experience for your next flight, we’re here to help you be better prepared for the flight. Luckily, TSA is very understanding of a child’s needs. Most liquid items packed for diaper bags are exempt from TSA’s liquids rule.
So, pack your breast milk, powdered formula, baby snacks, and more for the flight. According to TSA.gov, you’ll need to separate these items from your bag and place them into a separate bin for X-ray screening. Overall, TSA security should be able to clear your items pretty quickly without holding up the line. They are very accommodating to parents.
Now that you know that you’re able to pack the essentials plus more, let’s figure out how much you’ll need for different flights.
1-2 Hour Flights
Your diaper bag may look a bit different depending on if you’re packing for a baby or toddler. If you’re packing for a baby, consider at least 4 diapers and at least half a pack of wipes. Remember you still have a bit of time at the airport while you wait to board plus the chance to change when you arrive. For a toddler, consider a couple pull-ups or extra undies.
For your baby, consider a baby carrier or wrap to be hands free, along with a burp rag, toy and pacifier. And of course, at least 2 bottles in the case of a delay. For a toddler, one sippy cup should be fine!
Extra items we recommend are a few snacks, a small blanket, and a tablet or toy for your toddler. If you’re lucky and on a quick 50 minute fly to your neighboring state, you may want to consider the Dad Hoodie.
The Dad Hoodie features 6 internal pockets lined with mesh to hold the essentials plus will keep you cozy on the flight. It’s especially a game-changer if you’ve checked in a bag and want to get on the plane without any carry-on bags.
3–4 Hour Flights
Your diaper bag needs a bit more planning for longer flights, depending on whether you're packing for a baby or toddler. For a baby, pack at least 6 diapers and a full pack of wipes. You’ll need enough for the time at the airport, the flight, and potential delays.
A baby carrier or wrap is also helpful here. Don’t forget a pacifier, change of clothes, burp rag, and a favorite toy to help with fussiness. Plan for 3-4 bottles, even if your baby’s regular feeding schedule suggests fewer. You’ll want extras for delays or ear pressure relief during takeoff and landing. For a toddler, a sippy cup or spill-proof straw cup is usually enough.
For a toddler, bring several pull-ups or extra underwear, just in case.
Additional essentials: snacks, a small blanket, and a tablet, coloring book, or toy to keep your toddler entertained. Long flights are smoother when everyone is comfortable and well-prepared!
5+ Hour Flights
For long-haul flights, your diaper bag needs to be fully stocked and ready for anything. If you’re traveling with a baby, pack 8–10 diapers and a full pack of wipes to cover the airport wait, the flight, and any unexpected delays. For toddlers, bring plenty of pull-ups or multiple changes of underwear and clothes to handle accidents or spills.
A baby carrier is essential. Bring a pacifier, teething toy, and a few favorite toys to keep your baby happy. Pack at least 4-5 bottles (or more, depending on feeding frequency), ensuring you have extra for feeding during takeoff, landing, and any unplanned delays. For toddlers, a sippy cup will do the trick.
Since comfort is key on longer flights, add a small pillow or travel blanket for naps, a change of clothes for everyone, and snacks such as squeezable apple sauce or crackers. Keep your toddler entertained with a tablet loaded with movies and games.
Finally, don’t forget sanitizing wipes, a changing pad, and plastic bags for dirty clothes or diapers. Try to time feedings during takeoff and landing to help with ear pressure. As long as your baby is fed, entertained, in a fresh diaper, and close to you, they should have a good time on their flight.
