The Dad Hoodie Guide to Diaper Sizes

The Dad Hoodie Guide to Diaper Sizes

If you have a baby registry, then you probably already know that diapers will likely be a hot product for your loved ones to buy. Chances are, they know your baby will go through so many. If you’re a new dad, just wait. You’ll be changing diapers pretty often to ensure your baby is dry and comfy at all times!

You may be wondering if you’re getting too many diapers of a certain size. Don’t worry about that. You’ll need a lot for the newborn stage. You might do up to 10 changes per day during their first month. Make sure you have at least 300 diapers or more during their first month. Your baby will likely be under 8 pounds, so they’ll need this size for about 1-1.5 pounds or until they’re 10 pounds. Have at least 300 or more newborn diapers ready.

Size 1 & 2 Diapers

Once your baby is 8-14 pounds, you can switch to size 1. These are pretty common for babies up to three months old. When your baby is at least 12 pounds but still under 18, size 2 will be the next size. They’re a bit longer than size 1 and have better absorption.

Size 3 & 4 Diapers

Size 3 diapers are best for babies between 16-28 pounds. They will be quite larger than newborn diapers since these are designed with walking babies in mind. They’ll need more room for their growing legs and for more leak protection. So may skip this size and go into size 4 if their baby is growing quickly. Size 4 is great for babies between 22-37 pounds. Usually when they’re toddlers. You’ll want to stock up on diapers sizes 2-4 to last a while. Buying in packs of 200 or more is the way to go!

Size 5 & 6 Diapers

Size 5 diapers are best for toddlers 27 pounds or more. Usually toddlers will wear these until they’re officially potty trained. If you think they are too small for your toddler, consider a size 6. Especially if your toddler is over 35 pounds. You’ll buy these sizes for quite some time. Eventually you will transition them into Pull-Ups or undies to get them potty trained.

Remember, your child’s diaper should be snug around the waist and legs, but not too tight. It might be best to buy smaller packs (around 30 per pack) if you think your toddler is in between sizes so you can see which ones fit them best plus offer the best absorbency.

When To Go Up a Diaper Size

A couple ways to know it’s time to go up a size: If your pediatrician is taking note of weight gain, it’s time to switch diaper sizes. Also, if your baby is outgrowing onesies, they are likely outgrowing diapers! Regularly check that your baby is comfortable in their diaper after changing them. You want to make sure you have the correct sizes in your diaper bag as well, so be sure to repack a bag and donate smaller diapers if needed!

How Many Diapers Should I Pack?

Make sure you pack enough diapers if you’re going out with the baby. If you’re running errands, a few diapers should suffice. If you’re packing for daycare or a weekend getaway to Grandma’s it’s best to bring more than enough. Keep a pack of 32 in their bag.
